4 Simple Steps Depressed People Can Take to Become Self-Aware, Happy Humans

Despite being blessed beyond comprehension, I still poke hopelessness and encounter depression.

So I’m sharing the “4 STEPS TO WISDOM” in Anthony De Mello’s Awareness. I encourage you to apply these four steps to wake up and exit depressive episodes. (All below blockquotes are those of Anthony De Mello.)

STEP 1: Touch base with negative feelings.

The first thing you need is awareness of your negative feelings.

Many people are depressed without knowing they’re depressed. Negative Self-talk and resentment toward others are easy indicators.

STEP 2: Recognize negative feelings are in You, but they do not exist in reality.

Problems exist in the human mind.

You must unlearn what causes depression, and understand that your negativity resides within You.

We spend all our time and energy trying to change external circumstances… Negative feelings are in ‘I.’ No person on earth has the power to make you unhappy.

STEP 3: Never identify with negative feelings.

Your negative feelings have nothing to do with “I.”

Don’t define your essential self in terms of (negative) feelings. Don’t say, ‘I am depressed.’ If you want to say depression is there, that’s fine; if you want to say gloominess is there, that’s fine. But not: I am gloomy. That’s your illusion; that’s your mistake.

STEP 4: Realize You are the one who must change, not anyone else.

The person who is asleep always thinks he’ll feel better if somebody else changes.

You are the sole operator of your emotions and reactions.

Even if a spouse or boss changes, what does that do to you? You’re just as vulnerable as before. You are the one who needs to change, who needs to take medicine.
